Step 1: Cleaning “TEMP” Files

What you will have to do is:

  • Click on “Start
  • Type “Run” in the Search Box
  • Hit on “Enter
  • Type “ %temp% “ and hit “Enter”

This will lead you to the Temp folder. Here you’ll unnecessary files that your computer doesn’t need but still they occupy a lot of space on your hard disk. So what you could do is completely erase this. All you got to do is press “Ctrl+A”  and then hit “Shift+Del”. This would remove everything from the folder and you would clearly notice a marked difference in the performance of your computer.

Step 2: Cleaning “PREFETCH” Files

This is somewhat like deleting temp files. You got to follow the same steps. Just type “Prefetch” instead of “%temp%” in the Run box. Then, what you need to do is select all the files and delete them permanently. Just follow the steps above.

Step 3: Disk Cleanup

I’ll assume that most of you already know about this. So, you can conduct a disk clean up on your computer by following the steps below:

  • Go to “Start
  • Type “Disk Cleanup” in the “Search Box” and hit “Enter
  • This will open up the “Disk Cleanup” dialog box which will ask you to select the drive you want to clean up.
  • Once you’ve selected that, click on “Ok
  • It will then ask you to select the files you want to delete.
  • Select all and don’t worry about any important files being accidentally deleted as Disk Cleanup only puts forward unused files and junk files for deletion.
  • Then hit “Ok” and once you’ve done that, the system will start deleting the files you’ve selected

Having done this you will notice that your computer will run much faster and much more smoother. It will be way more efficient than what it was.

Step 4: Increasing Your Computer’s Virtual Memory

What you’ve got to do over here is:

  • Go over to the “Start” menu.
  • Click on “Computer” and right click on it.
  • Go down to “Properties”. This will give you information about your computer.
  • Then, click on “Advanced System Settings”. This will open up another dialog box.
  • Click on the “Advanced” tab.
  • Then click on “Settings” in the “Performance” section. This will lead you to another dialog box.
  • Look for the “Advanced” tab again and click on it.
  • This will lead you to the portion that will let you change your RAM. You can do this under “Virtual Memory” section.
  • Click on “Change”.
  • Uncheck the topmost box that you see. This will give you access to change the size of the RAM on your computer.
  • Then click on “Custom Size”.
  • Then you’ve got to calculate your RAM in terms of megabytes. To do this, open up “Calculator” and multiply your RAM, which is in gigabytes, by 1024. Then multiply it by 2. This is the amount of RAM you would generally want in your computer.
  • Type in this value in the “Initial Size” box.
  • In the “Final Size” box, add 1000 to the Initial value and type that in.
  • Then click on “OK”.

Once you’ve executed all the above-mentioned steps, you will notice a marked increase in the performance of computer. We always want that extra bit of RAM on our computers, be it for editing purposes or for gaming. Now you know how to do so.

Step 5: Modifying Power plans

Adjusting power plans on your computer according to your taste can also enhance the way in which your computer functions. You can modify your Power Plansby following these steps:
