Once upon a time ringtones were the coolest stuff to have on the phone. Even now we all love to have our favorite songs/tune as our ringtone. But for iPhone users don’t have full freedom to choose their favorite ringtone unless they buy ringtones or proceed to a complicated procedure.

Things were simple before, but due to Apple’s business intention of selling ringtones on the ‘App Store’ it just made things complicated. If you need to use the song as a ringtone you need to pay twice than the actual price to set it as ringtone in an easy way.

But we will show to how to set the existing song as your ringtone without need to spend a dime. Apple has made things complicated just to make sure people pay twice and buy the ringtone than to take the complicated road.

If you don’t want to take the complicated road and want to try out with the some other app, then you better know that none of those apps does what it claims to do so.

Let us now take a Detour to set custom ringtone on a iPhone

But before we go for the steps we need a PC/Laptop to further proceed. You can use Windows OS or Mac OS.

  1. Open ‘Menu’ launch ‘iTunes’ on PC/Laptop and the song that you want it as a ringtone. We need to take only 30 second clip of the selected song, as maximum duration for ringtone is just 30 second. So make sure you select your favorite part of the song.
  2. Right-click on the song and next select ‘Get Info’ further select ‘Options’. Here you will be able to see ‘Start’ and ‘Stop’. So here is where you will be selecting your 30 second clip.
  3. Now create an AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) version of the song by right-clicking and choosing ‘Create AAC Version’ on the drop down menu. It will create an AAC version in your library.
  4. Right-click on your new AAC song clip and choose ‘Show in Folder’. From the found folder, now again right-click on your newly created song inside the folder and select ‘Get info’
  5. Next under the ‘Name and Extension’, change the extension to “.m4r” and also change the name with will be easier for you to identify. Then save the changes.
  6. Now, connect your iPhone to your computer and then open iTunes on phone. Select the “3 dots” and choose “Tones” in the drop-down menu.
  7. Drag the tone from the computer to the Tones section.
  8. Next on computer select iPhone icon and then go to “Tones” -> “Sync Tones” -> “Selected Tones” -> and select your tone and sync to your device.
  9. Now on your phone, go to “Settings” -> “Sounds” -> “Ringtones” and select your ringtone from the list.

There after going through all the above steps you have your favorite tone as your ringtone!

Now you can repeat this process as many times you want and add many custom ringtones. This de-tour process would take roughly around 10 minutes and it won’t even cost you a dime to do this.
